Critical Flat Closure Advocacy

The NPOAS Board will be attending the American Society of Breast Surgeons annual conference again this year, in Boston, MA, with an exhibitor’s booth to advocate for aesthetic flat closure. We will be engaging providers one on one, providing brochures for surgeons to take back home and use in their practices, learning about and supporting coding and oncoplastic training, and engaging with researchers. We thank you in advance for your contribution to this critical endeavor that we are undertaking on behalf of all women!

About The ASBrS Conference

The American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) is a professional medical society of general surgeons specializing in the treatment of breast disease. Their annual meeting is held every Spring, and brings members together to network, learn about the latest research in the field, and to participate in hands-on trainings.

Why We Are Attending

The conference provides unique advocacy opportunities.

Not Putting on a Shirt collaborates with diverse stakeholders to effect durable institutional change, and chief among these are breast surgeons. By meeting these medical professionals where they’re at, we are able to leverage unique advocacy opportunities to:

  • Engage providers in one-on-one discussion about aesthetic flat closure
  • Give interested providers brochures to take back and use in their practice
  • Network with other stakeholders – including the NAPBC – to promote our mission
  • Learn about the latest research in oncoplastic breast surgery
  • Offer a flat closure patient’s perspective during debates
  • Engage with researchers to promote further studies to support an improved, evidence-based standard of care for aesthetic flat closure

Conference Highlights

We look forward to seeing some of our Flat Friendly Directory Surgeons as well as other professional and institutional stakeholders.
Dr. Richard Fine, Chairman of the Board of ASBRS

Dr. Richard Fine, former President of ASBrS and current Chairman of the Board, leads the annual Coding and Reimbursement Symposium. Insurance coding is a big roadblock to parity for aesthetic flat closure and investment in this initiative is critical.

NAPBC logo

The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) will be hosts an annual exhibitor’s booth at ASBrS. NAPBC maintains the reconstructive consult protocol that NPOAS is targeting to include aesthetic flat closure. (Learn More)

Dr. Sharon Lum, a Flat Friendly Directory Surgeon, will be giving a talk on oncoplastics and unreconstructed mastectomy!

Dr. Liz O’Riordan, a former breast surgeon and unilaterally flat breast cancer survivor herself, will be giving a talk on the patient experience with exercise oncology.

Four Ways You Can Help

Not Putting on a Shirt, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) charity (ID #84-3021062).

2. Hold a Fundraiser

Facebook makes fundraising for the charity of your choosing as easy as a single click. Facebook charges no fees for donations made to nonprofits, and donations are tax deductible (subject to IRS rules). Learn more.

3. Donate FF Miles

Travel expenses are the largest component of our conference budget. If you have unused airline rewards miles, you can donate them to NPOAS! Contact us to learn how.

4. Help Us Spread the Word

Knowledge is power. Help us get flat closure on the radar of both patients and providers. You can spread the word both online and on the ground. Share our work on social media! Use the easy online form to request brochures mailed to use for leafleting locally.

How We Use Your Donation

Conference attendance is the single largest expense in our annual budget at NPOAS. The cost is proportional to the importance of the event – engaging medical professionals and making the case for aesthetic flat closure is absolutely critical to achieving parity. This is how our conference budget breaks down – please contact us with any questions.
